IN PARENTHESIS is a non-profit New York based company that has been producing theater and film since 1999. The company for us – is an umbrella in the main stream culture, under which we research, experiment and offer an alternative; a “parenthesis” embedded deeply inside the main text, but structurally and definitely independent from it.
We use sports, martial arts, dance, live music, film, video, stop-motion animation, shadow play and puppetry to create new work. We’ve produced 14 original theater plays and 10 films in the U.S.A.; 5 original plays in Seoul, Korea; 28 shows for young audiences in collaboration with the New York Philharmonic and 7 commissioned documentaries for non-profit organizations.
We’ve received support from NYSCA, Trust of Mutual Understanding, CEC ArtsLink, Etant Donnes, Laura Pels, the Dramatists’ Guild, Beaumarchais Foundation, Department of Cultural Affaires, The French Cultural Services, Troy, Blaustein and Jerome foundations.
We’ve performed at Lincoln Center, Florence Gould Hall, the Ohio Theater, Here, the Knitting Factory, American Academy of Arts and Letters, 59E59 Theaters, and toured in Eastern Europe and France. We have screened films at STARZ Denver FF, San Francisco Indie FF, Indianapolis International FF, Hot Springs Documentary FF, UNAFF, BAFF, as well as at film festivals in Germany, South Africa, India, Armenia and UK. Our work received critical acclaim from the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Village Voice, Bronx Times, Time Out, Theater Magazine, Theater Yale, Theater.com, & Blade, Le Monde, Liberation, Figaro, Korean Theatre Review, Chosun Ilbo (Korea), International Herald Tribune.
